FAQs | How do I make my own fan videos? | Technical questions about downloading/playing the videos
Where do you find all these fan videos?
I usually get them from fellow fan video artists ("vidders") on the C19 forum, but occasionally I recruit vidders from other fan communities, or from YouTube.
Can I have my fan videos hosted on your site?
I'd love to take a look at them, certainly! But I usually discover videos on my own, and then ask the vidder if I can host the videos. Bear in mind, that my criteria for selecting videos is not always consistent. There have been many times when I passed on an excellent video, just because I was too busy or lazy to upload it or update the site. (So, alas, I have missed out on hosting many wonderful videos.) Also, I have made a decision to not host any videos with grievous aspect ratio issues on this site. (A few videos here have minor issues, but nothing major.) If you don't know what aspect ratio is, read this page.
Do you host any videos, other than for Richard Armitage?
There's a period drama fan video page. The video selection process (finding videos on C19 and on YouTube) is also used, and most videos have excellent aspect ratio. There's also a Gerard Butler fan video section, but the videos are only made by me.
There's a whole site dedicated to fan videos, foolishpassion.org. Some of the vidders represented on this site made their first ever video (some which are hosted on this site) by following the tutorials there. Also, we now have a forum with even more tutorials, Foolish Passion Fan Video Forums. You are strongly encouraged to visit these sites and follow the tutorials.
A few tips about making fan videos—you don't need a new or expensive computer (though some spare disk space is really handy). You don't need to be a computer whiz—many of our vidders self-identify as "technophobes." However, you will need to be willing to read and follow the tutorials. These are not excessively complicated or difficult, so most people manage to follow along without much trouble.
This page gives you step-by-step instructions on the process of right-clicking and downloading. And here is a page which explains all the kinds of video file types available here, and what software is required to play each type of video. There is a link at the bottom of that page which takes you to another page which gives more detail and troubleshooting advice for playing the videos.
All the videos we have here are in commonly used formats. Many times, the type of file and codec selected are designed to optimize video quality. For various technical reasons, some of us do not opt to make a WMV version of our videos. It can be hassle (and also more costly for Mac video creators) and we don't always feel we get a satisfactory amount of quality (at least not without increasing file size significantly) when making a WMV file.
For those users who are accustomed to dealing with WMV only, or at least with files which automatically open in Windows Media Player, it may require a bit of an adjustment to play these other files. But it is not an unreasonable thing—there are all kinds of media files used on the Internet; sooner or later most of us have to learn how to deal with them.
Frequently when someone makes a claim that they "can't" play a non-WMV file, it is because they have failed to try a different media player (like VLC Player), but instead attempted to use Windows Media Player, even though it would require a lot of jumping through hoops to get it to work with the file in question. Often the path of least resistance is to have a back-up media player installed, which will recognize and play almost anything. The free media player VLC Player performs this task admirably in most cases.
